Detroit Manufacturer Visits D.C., Urges Trade Reform to Save American Jobs and Consumer Affordability

Detroit, MI - July 25, 2025 - In a decisive move to spotlight the impact of outdated tariff policies on American manufacturers, Nati Mazor, CEO of Reed Sportswear Manufacturing Company, joined nearly three dozen U.S. retailers in Washington, D.C., this week as part of the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) policy fly-in. The visit aimed to urge lawmakers to modernize textile tariff structures that are hurting domestic producers and driving up costs for consumers.

“Current U.S. tariff structures on textile inputs are undermining domestic leather production,” said Mazor. “While well-intended to protect American industry, these tariffs disproportionately burden U.S.-based manufacturers while favoring fully imported finished goods. That’s backwards — and it’s threatening both jobs and affordability.”

Founded in 1950, Reed Sportswear is a Detroit-based leather apparel manufacturer known for its American-made and hybrid product lines. In recent years, the company has successfully transitioned to a modern, direct-to-consumer business model powered by digital platforms and e-commerce, while maintaining its commitment to U.S.-based production and workforce development.

“Without fair access to affordable raw materials, we can’t compete — not even in our own market.”

During the Capitol Hill meetings, Mazor and fellow retailers shared personal accounts of how inflated import duties on essential textile inputs are making it harder to keep operations local. Meanwhile, foreign competitors shipping finished goods into the U.S. often pay little to no tariffs, creating a stark imbalance that discourages domestic investment and innovation.

Mazor emphasized that trade reform is not just about policy — it's about protecting the future of American manufacturing. He highlighted the need for smarter tariff rules that distinguish between value-added production and passive importation. “We support U.S. jobs, quality, and consumer choice — but the current system is punishing the very businesses trying to do the right thing.”

A Call to Action for Lawmakers

With inflation still impacting consumer budgets, especially for essentials like clothing, Reed is urging Congress to reassess tariffs that function as a regressive tax on working families. “Many of the lower-priced goods that can’t be made in the U.S. are still vital for middle- and lower-income households. Blocking them with high tariffs only makes life more expensive.”

The visit comes amid renewed discussions on trade and manufacturing policy as part of broader national economic planning. For Mazor and others in the NRF delegation, it’s clear that grassroots pressure is critical to reforming policies that have gone unchanged for decades.
