What happens when a book doesn’t try to impress you—but instead dares you to confront yourself? Jerry Goodwin’s DON’T READ THIS YOU MIGHT LEARN SOMETHING! ESPECIALLY ABOUT YOURSELF doesn’t come wrapped in warm, fuzzy affirmations. It skips the pep talks. It doesn’t offer a quick fix.
What it offers is truth—and not the filtered, bite-sized kind.
This book is a no-nonsense, thought-provoking, and at times uncomfortably real conversation about the parts of ourselves we often ignore. Love. Respect. Greed. Power. Four words that drive how we live, love, argue, dream, fail, and try again. Goodwin doesn't analyze them like a professor—he dissects them like someone who's lived long enough to know better.
With a tone that shifts from sharp and witty to downright reflective, Goodwin guides readers through a journey of self-confrontation. Why do we lie? Why does the ego need to be fed so often? Why do we crave being seen, heard, respected—yet betray our values to get there?
The book isn’t afraid to challenge you. It asks tough questions, points fingers (mostly at you), and pulls back the curtain on what makes us tick. At times, it feels like therapy. At others, like sitting down with that brutally honest friend who tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.
There are no five-step solutions here. Instead, there are character-defining questions and word association tests that ask: are you confident or confused? Loyal or lustful? Are you living with purpose—or just passing time?
It’s not about perfection. It’s about ownership. And this book holds you accountable in the best way.
About the Author
Jerry Goodwin was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1951 and raised in Chicago, where his early years were shaped by grit, ambition, and deep reflection. After moving to Atlanta for college, he started his career at AT&T but eventually walked away from corporate life to pursue his true calling: educating and mentoring young people.
For over 40 years, Goodwin served as a history teacher, counselor, and coach. Thirty of those years were spent on the field—coaching sports, building character, and showing students what it means to fight for something more than a score. His classrooms weren’t just about history—they were about purpose, resilience, and believing in yourself, even when no one else does.
A self-described introvert, Goodwin wrote this book not to sell an idea, but to leave a legacy. His mission? To reach the doubters. The quiet strugglers. The ones who’ve lost their direction or never had it in the first place. His message is simple: you are not stuck. You are not finished. And if you keep pushing, you’ll get where you’re meant to be.
This book is that push.
Now available in paperback, hardcover, and eBook on Amazon. Read it if you dare—but don’t expect to come out unchanged.
