SIIA Media Announces Winners for the 2025 Jesse H. Neal Awards

SIIA Media announces the winners of the 71st Annual Jesse H. Neal Awards, recognizing excellence in business-to-business (B2B) journalism. Sixty-three winners were selected culminating in the highly coveted Grand Neal Award, a testament to unparalleled journalistic merit across all domains. The awards were presented on Friday, May 16 at The Yale Club.

This year’s Grand Neal was awarded to “A scientific fraud. An investigation. A lab in recovery.” The report appeared in The Transmitter and was written by Callie McMurray, with contributions from Brady Huggett.

Additionally, the following leadership awards representing mentorship, vision, commitment and editorial ethics and courage were presented.

  • Patrick Boyle, reporter, Association of American Medical Colleges was named the 2025 McAllister Editorial Fellow. The Fellowship promotes the study of business media by placing fellows as teachers and advisors at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.
  • Jean Kumagai, Executive Editor, IEEE Spectrum, was selected as the winner of the Marianne Dekker Mattera Mentor Award. This award honors leaders who excel in mentoring and is presented in memory of Dekker, the long-time Editor in Chief of RNMagazine and Medical Economics to reflect her legacy of mentorship.
  • The 57th Annual G.D. Crain Jr. Award was presented to Lee Nichols, Gulf Energy Information. The annual award is given to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the development of editorial excellence in business media over the course of a career.
  • The Timothy White award winner is James Nani, Reporter, Bloomberg Law, for his investigative work on A Star Bankruptcy Judge’s Downfall: Bloomberg Law Investigation.” This award was established to acknowledge the daily challenges and pressures that editors face. The award is given to an editor whose work displays courage, integrity, and passion.

“These awards represent the pinnacle of editorial distinction within B2B journalism, showcasing the finest contributions across various industries,” said Chris Mohr, President, SIIA. “As the business journalism landscape continues to evolve, we are honored to recognize the outstanding contributions these journalists make in covering their respective industries.
