JUUL pods are FDA-authorized vapes that come with cartridges that can be discarded and replaced once emptied. According to Lou Square’s guide, these pods are available in two nicotine strengths: 3% and 5%, which contain 23 mg and 40 mg of nicotine, respectively. The e-liquid is made from JUUL’s nicotine salt formulation, which allows nicotine to be absorbed into the bloodstream more quickly than freebase alternatives, making it less harsh on the throat and easier to consume.
Research from Tobacco Control says that one 5% JUUL pod delivers an equivalent amount of nicotine to one pack of cigarettes, though the actual number may vary depending on usage. However, unlike cigarettes, JUUL pods do not combust and will not create as many of the other toxic compounds found in cigarette smoke. Lou Square’s guide adds that one study from the National Academies of Sciences found that the concentration of select toxic compounds was 9 to 450 times lower in e-cigarette aerosols than in cigarette smoke; the FDA also describes e-cigarettes as “generally a lower-risk alternative for adults who smoke cigarettes.”
Additionally, smoking often causes acute side effects like coughing, shortness of breath, reduced sense of taste and smell, and yellowing of teeth; long-term health impacts are also well-documented and include chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, stroke, and heart disease. On the other hand, JUUL users may experience throat and mouth irritation, coughing, headaches, dizziness, and nausea, though they typically will not see pronounced deterioration of their respiratory health. However, Lou Square says that researchers consistently note that vapes are still relatively new, and long-term health impacts have not yet been studied extensively.
Lou Square adds that both JUUL pods and cigarettes will cause nicotine withdrawal if the user stops abruptly. Those who want to quit smoking and vaping are advised to do so gradually to avoid uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms.
