-- For more than 90 years, ZARGES has made a business out of things that survive. This year the German manufacturer extended that idea past its own products, adding a further 1,000 trees to its forest in Madagascar through its partnership with Evertreen.
The company began on 1 September 1933, when Walther Zarges opened a two-person workshop in Stuttgart with a single idea: that aluminum, then used almost exclusively in aircraft, could be put to work making everyday life easier. It grew into Europe's first international light-metal construction company. ZARGES today is headquartered in Weilheim, Upper Bavaria, with around 800 employees and three production plants in Europe, and is represented in the United States by ZARGES Inc. of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Nine decades on, the job has not changed much. ZARGES cases carry sophisticated electronics, defense equipment, drone and satellite hardware and photographic gear through weather, extreme temperatures, and rough handling. The same cases are strapped to overland rigs and carried into the backcountry.
The latest 1,000 are going into the ground in Madagascar, among the most biodiverse places on earth and also among the most heavily deforested. Sustainability at ZARGES is organised around environmental, social and economic responsibility, with safety added as a fourth pillar reflecting the company's role as a manufacturer of safety-related work equipment. The reforestation program sits inside that framework rather than beside it.
